Trust and Hope

Jeremiah 17:7
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

Trusting the LORD

Much is written in the Scriptures about the notion of trusting in the LORD, so much so that it often has little meaning to us, other merely a religious idea or concept.

The word that is translated as “trusteth” in this verse means to trust in, to have confidence in, to be secure in, or to be sure of. So, to trust in, or to have confidence in, something or someone is more than just a religious idea. It is a certainty, a confidence, a sense of safety and security that exists within a person toward God.

The second major word in this verse is the word “hope”, in the phrase “whose hope the LORD is.” It means the act of confiding, or the taking of refuge in, or having full confidence in.

How Do We Trust the LORD?

Trust comes as faith in God’s word comes, or, that is, as faith in His promises comes. Faith and trust work together. Trust is not something we work up. It is something that comes to us as we think about and meditate in the promises of God’s word. The Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing the word of God.

Begin to search out God’s promises today. He has a promise for any and every situation we may find ourselves in. And, as we search His word, faith in His promises will begin to arise in our heart. And with faith comes both trust and hope in the One Who promised. And blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD.
