Stagger Not at the Promise

Psalm 138:2
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

I Will Praise His Word

The psalmist declares that he will worship the LORD, and give praise to His name because of His lovingkindness and because of His truth. His truth, by the way, is His word. Another psalm goes as far as to say that His word itself is to be praised.

Psalm 56:4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

The psalmist is referring to the word of God, God’s written and recorded word. And he attributes his trust in God to His word, that is, to the word of God.

The Source of Trust in God

Even today, the source of trust in the LORD, is trust in His word. Either He is good for His word, or He isn’t. But the Bible says that He is faithful Who has promised.

Abraham’s Faith

The source of Abraham’s faith, the Bible tells us, was in that which the LORD had spoken to Him, the promise God had given him.

Romans 4:20 He [Abraham] staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
Romans 4:21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

The Footsteps of Abraham’s Faith

That’s what Abraham believed, that God was willing and able to do what He promised to do. He staggered not at the promise of God. And the Bible says that we, as New Testament believers, walk in the footsteps of Abraham’s faith. In other words, we believe the same way that he did.

Take the promises of God. We have a whole book full of God’s promises, in the Bible. And they are promises that we can believe and take to the bank. The One Who promised is faithful, the Bible says, and that He has magnified His word above His name. If He promised it, He will do it.
