Meditate in His Word

Psalm 119:97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
Psalm 119:98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
Psalm 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

The Word of God

This psalm, Psalm 119, is the longest psalm, as well as being the longest chapter in the Bible, consisting of 176 verses. Every verse in Psalm 119 makes mention of the word of God, in one form or another, such as His word, His law, His testimonies, His commandments, His precepts, and so forth.

The psalmist is saying that he loves the word of God, or God’s law, and that the word of God is his meditation all day long. The law technically speaks of the first five books of the Bible, but the law was the Scripture, the word of God, that they had at that point in time. Little did the psalmist know that the very psalms, or songs, they were writing, would one day be viewed as Scripture.

Meditation in God’s Word

The subject of meditation in the word of God is not an isolated teaching. There are numerous Scriptures that make mention of it. This psalm points out one of the main benefits of meditating in the word, and that has to do with the gaining of wisdom and spiritual understanding.

Wisdom and Understanding

The psalmist declares that, through His word, the LORD has made him wiser than his enemies, and has given him more understanding than his teachers. There is great benefit in meditating and pondering the word of God.

Delight in the Word

The key is to delight in the word. The psalmist says, “O, how I love Your word!” Meditating in the word was not a chore for him. It was a delight, as it should also be for every believer. The more one ponders the word of God, the more one delights in it. And the Bible also tells us to delight ourselves in the LORD, and He will give us the desires of our heart.

Take time to pursue the word of God day by day. Spend time especially in the promises of God. Meditate in them, ponder them, write them in a journal of notebook, and think about what they are saying. Meditation is a form of prayer, in which the LORD does most of the talking. Delight in His word, and let Him teach you His ways.
