A Very Present Help

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Psalm 46:3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

He is Our Hiding Place

God is our refuge, or our shelter and protection, and our strength, or our might, the One Who openly assists us in times of trouble and distress. This is one of those verses that is worth declaring boldly, and especially when problems and situations arise. It is not wishful thinking. It is what the word of God declares the LORD to be to us. It is a promise we can stand upon.

The Sons of Korah

This Psalm, in its title, is dedicated to the sons of Korah. Korah had led a rebellion against Moses, to usurp Moses’ authority as the leader of the people. Korah, and the men who allied with him, died as the result of their rebellion. The sons of Korah would carry the guilt of the rebellion of their father, yet were used to minister in the music of David’s tent of worship. This Psalm was likely given to encourage them, as they endeavored to rise above the guilt of their past. The song was declaring God to be our hiding place of safety, and One who would help in every time of need, a reminder to them of God’s faithfulness.

A Song Upon Alamoth

The Psalm, according to its title, was to be a song upon Alamoth. Alamoth is a musical term indicating that the song was to be sung by the young females, or, that is, the virgin girls, probably those girls under the age of thirteen. In other words, the song would be sung by the female children, those who most depended on the protection of their parents, the ones who would be the most vulnerable in time of trouble.

Stand Against Fear

This passage of Scripture is helpful in standing against fear, in whatever form it might arise. It says that though the earth be changed and even removed, though the mountains wash into the sea, though the waters roar, and the mountains shake, we will not fear. It’s a declaration of total trust in God, our Refuge.

Refuse to let fear rule you today. Stand up against it and declare that God is your hiding place and your refuge, and assure yourself of the certainty that you are safe in Him. Take a stand of trust and confidence in Him.
